Demand Chain Transportation Specialist

The Transportation Specialist, IV is responsible for leading day-to-day transportation operations while driving continuous improvement, strategic initiatives, and cross-functional alignment. This role oversees transportation planning execution, carrier performance, and KPI attainment, while providing guidance to Transportation Specialists and Load Planners. The position plays a key role in optimizing transportation networks, leading projects, and supporting sourcing strategies to improve service, cost efficiency, and operational performance.

What you'll be doing:

  • Lead and provide direction to Transportation Specialists and warehouse load planners across assigned facilities to ensure optimal load planning, routing, and TMS execution aligned with KPIs (service, cost, utilization).
  • Own and drive transportation performance metrics, including on-time delivery, shipment aging, carrier compliance, and cost performance; identify trends, develop action plans, and communicate results to leadership.
  • Lead cross-functional projects and continuous improvement initiatives focused on transportation optimization (network design, routing strategies, cost reduction, service improvements).
  • Support and influence transportation sourcing strategies, including RFQs, carrier selection, and strategic relationship management with key carriers.
  • Act as escalation point for complex transportation issues, including service failures, routing challenges, and carrier performance concerns; ensure timely resolution and stakeholder communication.
  • Coach and develop team members by providing guidance, training, and feedback to enhance technical expertise and decision-making capabilities.
  • Partner with Sales, Warehouse Operations, and Supply Chain teams to align transportation strategies with business needs and customer expectations.
  • Drive compliance with DOT/FMCSA regulations and company transportation policies; ensure adherence across all operations.
  • Support systems optimization and TMS enhancements, including identifying gaps and recommending process or technology improvements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Decision Making Responsibility:

  • Provides oversight and direction to transportation planning decisions across assigned operations.
  • Approves routing strategies, carrier selections, and escalation actions for service failures.
  • Recommends and implements improvements to transportation strategy, network design, and carrier allocation.
  • Leads decision-making for project initiatives impacting cost, service, and operational performance.
  • Influences sourcing decisions and carrier partnerships through performance analysis and business needs.

What you need to be successful:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • 8-12 years of progressive experience in transportation, logistics, or supply chain operations.
  • 1-3 years of leadership, project management, or team lead experience required.
  • Strong knowledge of transportation planning, routing optimization, and carrier management.
  • Experience leading projects or continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Hazmat certification (or ability to obtain) preferred.
